Join the Writing Center as a New Consultant!
The Writing Center is looking for new consultants to join the team!
■ What does a consultant do?
Our Writing Center consultants give 1:1 consultations (via Zoom and offline) on students’ writing and presentations. Consultants work with students to enhance their writing/presentation skills and provide feedback to help strengthen academic competencies.
♦ Writing Consultations
Our consultants typically work with students currently writing theses, SRPs, capstones, term papers, resumes, and graduate school applications. Some consultants, typically current Ph.D. students, also work with doctoral students to provide feedback on their draft journal articles or dissertation chapters.
Consultants may also, on request, work with students on specific skills, such as source integration (paraphrasing and quoting) and referencing.
♦ Presentation Consultations
Our consultants assist students with structuring their presentations, decluttering their slides, refining their delivery, or overcoming public speaking anxiety. Consultants also serve as a ‘practice audience’ and allow students to familiarize themselves with speaking in KDI School lecture rooms equipped with touchscreens and digital podiums.
Consultants may also have the opportunity to lead academic/professional workshops.
■ Required/ Desirable Qualifications:
A strong applicant will typically have more than one semester left at KDI School and some of the following qualifications:
♦ Experience writing and presenting in a professional environment (writing reports, giving presentations, or leading training sessions)
♦ Completion of an academic writing class (undergraduate or graduate) or a professional presentation class/program
♦ Experience tutoring, coaching, or teaching (paid or voluntary)
♦ Applicants can also highlight public-speaking/presentation experience drawn from their professional background (e.g., sales, public relations, fund raising, training delivery etc.) or personal life (e.g., religious community, social clubs, volunteering).
♦ Participation in a public speaking or debate club
♦ The ability and willingness to work with students from diverse language and cultural backgrounds (global competency)
♦ A positive attitude to (or proficiency in) using AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT)
♦ Awareness of academic integrity issues and plagiarism in the context of higher education
Priority will be given to applicants with experience teaching or professional writing/presentation experience.
The Writing Center trains new consultants and seeks to provide service continuity for students; therefore, we will prioritize applicants with more than one semester remaining at KDI School.
