Professor Tatsuo Oyama, University in China

CAMPUS Asia is an inter-governmental scholarship program, which allows the KDI School students to earn credits or/and a degree in partner schools in China and Japan. This program promotes cooperation among universities in Asia, allowing students to obtain dual degrees while gaining the cultural experience of living and studying in three different Asian countries. The KDI School along with GRIPS (National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies) in Japan and the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University in China comprise one consortium and run the program.

On March 11^st, 2015, the 4^th KDIS-GRIPS joint seminar was held as a part of CAMPUS Asia program, at the Ambassador Hall of the KDI School. 18 professors and Ph.D. students headed by Professor Tatsuo Oyama from GRIPS participated in this program. This one-day program was divided into two sessions, comprised of morning special lectures and the Ph.D. students’ thesis presentation in the afternoon.

Professor Oyama started his lecture titled “Quantitative Social Systems Analysis.” Professor Oyama first gave simple background information on social system analysis, on how researchers have tried applying different theories and methods to solve complex and diversified social problems in society. Researchers have used three different methods so far to solve varying social problems; data analysis techniques, mathematical modeling analyses, and building a new theory.

In the afternoon session started with presentations guided by three Ph.D. candidates from GRIPS and two Ph.D. candidates from the KDI School. The session was facilitated by Professor Jong-Il You and Ph.D. Chair of the KDI School.

Each presentation was followed by active discussions from the students of both universities on the aspects of research methodology and findings. This one-day special lecture and joint seminar between GRIPS and the KDI School provided a great opportunity for students to share knowledge as well as promote cooperation among Asian universities.
