At the KDI School of Public Policy and Management, students are encouraged to push their boundaries and explore new heights in their academic and professional endeavors. Bonglim, a part-time student in the Master of Public Management (MPM) program, has exemplified this spirit by achieving an extraordinary milestone: delivering 100 academic presentations during his studies. This impressive accomplishment, alongside his work in a government office in Daejeon, speaks to his dedication, passion, and commitment to both his studies and his profession.
A Journey Inspired by International Relations
Bonglim’s academic journey at KDI School was inspired by his role in international cooperation at his workplace. As he envisioned the future of international relations in public institutions, he discovered the MPM program at KDI School and decided to focus on Global Governance and Political Economy. Influential professors like Wonhyuk Lim and Byoungjoo Kim played pivotal roles in broadening his perspective on international relations. Reflecting on his experience, Bonglim shared, “My professors have greatly shaped my understanding of global governance and have inspired me to explore the complexities of international relations.”
The Goal of 100 Presentations: A Unique Achievement
What led Bonglim to set the ambitious goal of reaching 100 presentations? It all began with his admiration for Professor Byoungjoo Kim, whose active teaching style emphasized the importance of presentations. Bonglim had known Professor Kim from EBS educational broadcasts and naturally gravitated toward his classes. “His teaching style inspired me to set the goal of reaching 100 presentations,” Bonglim explained. Teaming up with Robert, a fellow student from Poland, in the Change Management class, Bonglim embarked on this journey, eventually achieving his goal.
Memorable Milestones Along the Way
Among the many presentations Bonglim delivered, one that stands out is his 99th presentation in Professor Seungjoo Lee’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation class. This presentation was particularly memorable because it focused on Daejeon Technopark, where Bonglim works. Collaborating with his KDI School "young brother" Ananta and other unique team members made the experience even more enriching. “It was a project that brought together my academic and professional worlds,” he recalled with pride.
Engaging the Audience: The Key to Successful Presentations
Bonglim believes that capturing the audience's attention is crucial for a successful presentation. He often starts with an icebreaker by mentioning his goal of delivering 100 presentations and indicating which number each presentation is. This approach not only helps ease his nerves but also engages the audience right from the start. “It’s a way to connect with the audience and make the presentation more relatable,” he shared.
Balancing Work, Study, and International Travel
As a part-time student working full-time in a government office, Bonglim faced the challenge of balancing his professional duties with his academic responsibilities. He found that meeting friends at school and engaging in collaborative projects helped him relieve the stress of work. “The desire to learn and the joy of getting to know my classmates have been the driving forces behind my two-year journey,” he said.
However, managing overlapping international business trips and classes proved to be particularly challenging. Bonglim recalled attending Professor Taejong Kim’s Public Finance and Public Policy class from Las Vegas at 3 a.m. during a business trip. “I’m grateful for the understanding shown by my professors during these times,” he added.
The Rewards of Presentation-Based Courses
For Bonglim, the true value of presentation-based courses lies in the academic knowledge gained during the preparation process. Researching materials, adding his own insights, and sharing knowledge with others have been particularly fulfilling for him. “It’s the sharing of knowledge that makes the process truly rewarding,” he emphasized.
Looking Ahead: Pursuing a Ph.D. and Contributing to International Relations
Bonglim’s academic journey at KDI School is far from over. After his graduation in August, he plans to pursue a part-time Ph.D. at the school. “Graduation isn’t the end for me; I’ll be diligently preparing for the Ph.D. program in August and September,” he revealed. His ultimate goal is to continue contributing to international relations, inspired by his work on the Laos ODA project and his involvement with Laos Technopark.
Bonglim hopes to see Laos Technopark grow and aspires to work in a role that furthers international cooperation. Reflecting on his time at KDI School, he said, “Getting to know Professors Junesoo Lee and Changkeun Lee has been incredibly rewarding, enriching both my academic and professional journey.”
A Role Model for Future Students
Bonglim’s journey at KDI School is a testament to the power of determination, passion, and the desire to learn. His achievement of 100 presentations is not just a personal milestone but also an inspiration for fellow students and future leaders in public management. As he continues his academic and professional journey, Bonglim’s story will undoubtedly serve as a source of motivation for others to pursue their goals with the same level of commitment and enthusiasm.
