Prof. Jaehyuk Park’s latest research, recently published in Technology in Society, explores the ethical challenges of using Generative AI in social science research, especially for junior scholars (e.g., Master or Ph.D. students). Despite growing discussions on AI ethics, little attention has been given to how research ethics should evolve in response to these new technologies. Drawing on 17 in-depth interviews, the study identifies three key narratives—the equalizer, the meritocracy, and the community—highlighting that ethical dilemmas arise not just from AI functionalities but from their integration into academic institutions. The authors argue for a broader ethical framework that goes beyond universal checklists to incorporate community engagement, institutional governance, and societal impact. This research was initiated during the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science (SICSS) Korea 2023, co-organized by Prof. Jaehyuk Park (KDI School), Prof. June Jeon (KAIST), and Prof. Lanu Kim (KAIST). SICSS-Korea has been hosted by KDI School and KAIST from 2022.
