The paper by Professor Jaehyuk Park has been published in EPJ Data Science 사진1

A recent study by Jaehyuk Park and his team, “Rap as a Social Reflection: A Quantitative Analysis of Social Conditions and Lyrical Expressions,” provides large-scale empirical evidence that music closely reflects real-world social conditions.

Analyzing over 26,000 rap songs in the United States (1990–2015), we show that themes such as violence, misogyny, materialism, and drug use do not simply increase over time, as commonly assumed. Instead, these themes fluctuate in tandem with societal changes, including crime rates, poverty levels, and drug-related arrests.

Notably, the alignment between lyrical content and social conditions becomes even stronger when focusing on African American communities, highlighting how cultural expression is deeply rooted in the lived experiences of specific social groups.

By combining computational text analysis with social data, this research demonstrates that cultural products like rap music can serve as real-time indicators of social and economic realities, offering a new lens for understanding societal change.
