On May 11, nineteen students took part in a temple stay program at the Guryongsa Temple in Gangwon province. This cultural-experience program was intended to help international students to understand more about Korean culture and traditions, especially Korean Buddhism. “The stay offers a unique insight into the everyday lives of practicing monks in Korea and to the preservation of 1700 years of history and tradition,” Kethia LIM (2007 MPP) said.

Besides practicing meditation through silent working on the mountain, students learned about how to find their ‘true self’ amongst the harmony of nature. They also learned about a number of practicing methods such as Yebul (ceremonial service involving chanting), Chamseon (Zen meditation), Dahdoh (tea ceremony) and Balwoo Gongyang (communal Buddhist meal service).

“One of many things I learned during the temple was about tea ceremony,” Neema (2007 MBA) said. “Korean says that there are several ways to enjoy good tea. One should start off by enjoying the sound of water boiling, and then relaxing with the soothing aroma of tea and seeing its soft and subtle colors. Lastly, one can feel the warmth of the tea radiating through the cup as they slowly savor the taste.”
