Empathy is a universal trait and youth, in its idealist fashion, is especially sensitive to the plight of others less fortunate than them. The recent Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan demonstrated that amply when people from all over the world united to help their brethren in their hour of distress. It was therefore fitting that students at the KDI School, representing many nations of the world, also decided to contribute to charity. Since charity begins at home, what better way to do it than to help the Migrant Workers Hospital located at Guro Digital Complex Station in Seoul which is run by an NGO called ‘Global Love Sharing.’

The first (aptly titled) Global Fund Raising Party was therefore initiated and organized by two of our very enterprising and energetic students, Jihye Lee (2010 MPP/ED, Korea) and Cholpon Chargynova (2010 MPP/PM, Uzbekistan) with many other volunteers and in collaboration with students at the neighbouring KAIST. The idea behind was not just to raise awareness about the plight of migrant workers but to establish an effective network with KAIST students as well - the first such coming-together of the two institutions. This was further endorsed by the presence of the Dean of KAIST Business School, Dr Ravi Kumar and our own Associate Dean, Dr Hun Joo Park. The occasion was also graced by two honourable guests from the South African and Algerian Embassies.

The event was scheduled on May 16th at the KAIST Supex Auditorium and went off to a flying start. After the introduction, the two guests appreciated the effort to bring together enterprising students from the two prestigious institutions in a joint quest to contribute to a noble cause. After that the signature activity was undertaken which was the auction of miscellaneous items contributed by KDIS students and faculty. It was enthusiastically participated by all and raised a substantial donation. In order to enliven the proceedings, a raffle draw and a colourful fashion show, comprising of almost a dozen of KDIS international students in traditional costumes of their respective countries, were specially organized along with musical performances by KAIST students, a group of singers called ‘Tropica’ and a professional B-boying dancing team ‘Addiction Crew’ which brought the crowd to their feet.

The event went on to raise more than 5 Million won through sale of tickets, auction and donations both from individuals and the schools. It was eagerly participated by the KDIS students who prepared meals for the guests, donated auction artifacts, bought more than 300 tickets, contributed towards the arrangements and, above all, proved by their intent and actions that youth all over the world are united in their efforts to help their fellows in need. In a simple ceremony on 15th June, Jihye, on behalf of all the students of KDIS and KAIST, presented the donation amount to the Chairman, Global Love Sharing as a token of our care and empathy for the needy children. So what are the future plans? Jihye is happy with the outcome and hopes they can continue this trend. “We are not stopping here. We look forward to organizing yet another event next year with students of Korea University & KAIST for facilitating the school for children of migrant workers”, she added. Kudos for that spirit. Let’s hope this becomes a regular feature of life at KDIS and international students, year after year, can participate in such constructive and noble activities.
