Saqib Fardan Ahmada, better known as Saqib, is an MDP Spring 2023 student in his second semester at KDI School. We speak to Saqib about his academic life, student experiences, and his way of overcoming challenges at KDI School.
Why did you choose to enter KDI School?
Since 2019, I have been familiar with KDI School while pursuing my undergraduate studies. Within my own academic institution, the Faculty of Social and Political Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada, there is a notable presence of alumni and professors who have obtained master's degrees from KDI School. Observing these individuals, it becomes evident that they possess exceptional research and policy analysis capabilities in the realm of public policy studies, showcasing their expertise in their respective fields.
As I contemplate my future trajectory, my aspiration lies in attaining expertise in social policy studies, specifically focusing on the pressing matter of aging populations currently faced by East Asian countries. I anticipate that my own nation will confront similar challenges in the forthcoming years. Through engaging in research and generating publications, I aim to make a meaningful contribution to this specific issue, facilitating novel perspectives and aiding in the development of suitable policies.
Furthermore, I firmly believe that KDI School offers a comprehensive curriculum design, further enhanced by the presence of distinguished scholars specializing in public policy. By engaging with such esteemed academic resources, I am confident that I can strengthen my competitive advantage as I pursue my academic endeavors.
What are some of your favorite things about KDI School?
In addition to its academically-driven pursuits, KDI School, as a graduate school, remarkably fosters a vibrant and inclusive environment that encourages international cross-cultural interactions among its students. I recall a notable event that took place at the onset of spring—a mass hiking activity, engaging participants from all parts of KDI School. My friend and I ponder in amusement, "Where else on Earth would you find a graduate school organizing a hiking activity involving over 200 individuals?" Confidently, but lacking empirical evidence, I can proudly answer, "It is only KDI School!"
What has been the biggest challenge for you at KDI School, and how did you overcome it?
As a student with a background in applied social studies, I found some courses to be challenging. During the spring semester, I had to take a core course, which is Analysis of Market and Public Policy (AMPP). This particular course delved deep into the realm of microeconomic studies and their application to real-world public policy issues. I remember being totally confused with all the questions during the first assignment and receiving a disappointing score.
However, I believe that it is not impossible to overcome these challenges. It is fortunate that I have many helpful friends who can help me discuss and solve the homework. We have a weekly discussion to review the questions and figure out how to solve them. Surprisingly, this form of study really fit with my style, so I could take the midterm and final exams with confidence.
Despite the difficulty, there was a blessing in disguise. AMPP offered me a fresh perspective on the intricate relationship between public policy and market mechanisms. Moreover, I am confident that this course will lay a solid foundation for honing critical thinking skills, facilitating my ability to identify and quantify the causal factors that influence decision-making processes.
What is one memorable experience that you have had at KDI School?
As a student hailing from a tropical country where warm weather prevails year-round, the opportunity to experience a country characterized by distinct seasons proved to be an extraordinary blessing. Upon my arrival in Korea during the month of January, I embarked on a journey filled with memorable moments, particularly during my highway traverse from Incheon to Sejong City in the midst of winter. The following day, I awakened to a wondrous sight—a landscape blanketed in snow. I quickly went outside. The sight of snowflakes forming exquisite crystals upon my jacket remains etched in my mind as one of the most magical moments I have ever witnessed.
