KDI School, currently celebrating its 27th anniversary, hosted a special homecoming event for the Class of 2004, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the class. The event brought together 18 domestic and international alumni, creating a vibrant atmosphere of nostalgia and forward-looking discussions.

As a part of the 2-day homecoming event, the 2004 alumni participated in a special networking session with current KDIS students in KDI School’s Lincoln  Hall on July 18. This session provided a platform for the students and alumni to network and engage in meaningful exchanges about careers, professional experiences, and stories related to KDIS.

The networking event commenced with an opening speech from Mr. Jang Hoon Lee, the Representative of the Class of 2004, who expressed his delight at returning to KDI School. In his welcoming remarks, he reflected on the formative years spent at the institution, emphasizing the joy of reconnecting with old friends and sharing stories with current students.

Among the notable speakers were two alumni from Russia who shared their unique experiences. Andrey Kovsh, a 2004 alumnus, former affiliate of The Institute for Far Eastern Studies, and current KDI School visiting researcher, remarked that his time as a student at KDI School was amazing and emphasized that the knowledge, networks, and friendships he built there have been a cornerstone of his professional life.

Elina Shin, another 2004 alumna from Russia and a Senior Contracts Engineer at Arrow Energy, also shared her heartfelt reflections. She encouraged current students to cherish every moment at KDI School, sharing how the experience at KDIS changed her life.

"Revisiting the libraries, dormitories, and all the familiar places brings back so many memories. The professors and the networks you form here are invaluable. Leverage them to the fullest," Shin advised.

A cute Heart – a moment for the old days.

Hung Quoc Hoang, a 2004 alumnus from Vietnam and now the Country Head of Securities Services at Citibank N.A., Vietnam, also delivered an inspiring speech. He shared his career trajectory from KDI School to a leading position in a global financial institution and the school’s significant role in fostering global leaders.

The MC, Lyka, a current KDIS student from the Philippines, added a touch of nostalgia and fun to the proceedings by sharing interesting facts about the changes at KDI School since 2004. She noted that a Master's in Foreign Direct Investment (MFDI) was established in 2004, along with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. Many alumni present, including Ms. Shin and Mr. Hoang, were proud graduates of these programs. However, these programs do not exist anymore.

"Two decades apart, and so much has changed indeed," Lyka noted, emphasizing the school's dynamic evolution.

The event concluded with a lively Q&A session, where current students voiced their career concerns and uncertainties while the  Alumni shared their stories, offering reassurance and advice.

An interesting turn of the session was the "Dragon or Frog" test, a metaphorical exercise meant to help students evaluate their approach to challenges. This humorous but meaningful suggestion came from an alumnus when a student asked how to ensure they were on the right career track.

"If you are a frog, you limit yourself to the confines of a well. But if you are a dragon, you rise above and inspire others," the alumnus explained, leaving the students with a sense of empowerment and motivation.

The event was a celebration of the enduring bonds forged at KDI School and the impactful careers its graduates have built. The KDI School’s 27th anniversary and the Class of 2004 Reunion exemplified the spirit of unity and progression that defines our institution.

As the school continues to grow and evolve, we look forward to many more years of excellence, innovation, and inspiring stories.
