On February 21, the Women's Leadership Forum at KDIS (@womenleaders.kdi) had its first meeting of the new semester! It is a student-led forum at the KDI School of Public Policy and Management that aims to empower women policymakers from diverse backgrounds. The forum provides a supportive environment for women to come together and exchange ideas, share experiences, and promote women's rights. Get to know the forum representatives and what activities it offers:

Please introduce yourself.

My name is Lovely, and I am an MDP student at KDI School. In the Philippines, I worked as a Tax Consultant, wherein we handled women's tax cases and empowered them with knowledge about their rights by navigating the laws, rules and regulations, and jurisprudence. This experience helped me become an advocate for the protection of people's rights.

My name is Alexandra, from Ecuador, and I’m an MDP student. My last work was at the Secretariat of Higher Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, where I was mainly responsible for public investment projects to increase people’s access to higher education, promote gender policies in higher education institutions, and develop the methodology of public economic resources distribution.

Why did you become interested in leading this Forum?

Women’s rights are always imperiled, and in this world where 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence,  we need women to get involved and participate actively in every space where we are to make sure that our rights are not taken away. This Forum is precisely a great platform for women to feel safe, share their experiences, and empower each other to stand up, speak, and spread awareness. It is for this reason that we became interested in leading this Forum and continuing the legacy that other students left here.

What are the Forum's goals or objectives at the KDIS?

The objectives of Women Leaders Forum are: to become a platform for KDIS women from around the world to converge, bond, and share their knowledge and experiences in order to empower and uplift future woman leaders inside and outside the KDI Community; and to be an inclusive and intersectional forum that is willing to hear the real-life stories and experiences from women across multiple contexts by also addressing race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, ability, sexual orientation, nationality, etc., and creating consciousness - through practical activities developed by the students themselves - about gender equality within the KDI community so that they carry on with this same work in their home countries.

Who is advising the Forum? Could you please tell us about her role?

The adviser of this Forum is Professor Kim Jo Eun, who teaches a Gender and Equality course at KDI School. She is the one who guides the representatives by making sure that the activities align well with the objectives and goals of the Forum.

What kind of activities are you planning to conduct in the Spring semester?

During the Meet and Greet Event on February 21, we discussed four activities that we would like to conduct during this Spring semester. In March and April, we plan to conduct a social media campaign about the current issues in relation to women's rights around the world. On March 8, in celebration of International Women's Day, the Forum will have a movie night, which will be open to students at the KDIS. In the third week of April, we would like to organize a Digital Gender Gap Conference, where we can discuss the gender gap in digital technology and how it affects socio-economic development. In the first week of May, we would like to organize a field trip to the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum for KDIS students to learn about women’s issues in Korea. However, we are always open to implementing new ideas and activities that people want to do through this Forum.

What advice would you give to students who are interested in pursuing leadership roles and getting involved with the Women's Leadership Club?

Don’t be afraid to speak up. Let’s not doubt ourselves or what a small group of people can do.
