Being a part of KDI School gives you the privilege to learn about many topics and world issues. In KDI School, you will find many clubs and forums; while some of the clubs can help keep you fit, the forums will help open your mind to more cultures and understand different ideas. Two of the most important forums are the Women’s Leaders Forum and the Human Rights Forum. Both of these forums discuss vital topics and spread awareness regarding many issues.
On November 29th, the LAC Forum, Women Leaders Forum, and Human Rights Forum launched an event to commemorate the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women that was on the 25th of November.
What to Know About The 25th of November
The 25th of November marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a global observance established by the United Nations in 1999 to raise awareness of gender-based violence and mobilize efforts to end it. The date honors the Mirabal sisters—Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa—three political activists brutally murdered in 1960 under the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. This day serves as a rallying call to governments, organizations, and individuals worldwide to implement policies, programs, and cultural changes that protect women and girls from all forms of violence. It also kicks off the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a campaign leading up to Human Rights Day on December 10th, uniting diverse communities in advocating for gender equality and justice.
Educational Content
The event started with Maria Del Riego (2023 MDP, Dominican Republic) explaining the story of the Mirabal Sisters and shedding light on the traumatic event with the consequences of such violent acts on women. After, the representative of the Women Leaders Forum discussed gender-based violence and explained its types and also discussed violence against women with its types.
Many people shared their stories and opinions regarding this critical issue and also shared how their countries deal with women’s related issues.
Activity Time: Express Your Thoughts
After the discussion, it was time to participate in a little creative activity. The representatives of the forums asked the attendees to express their thoughts and emotions regarding violence against women through art.
The attendees were requested to draw a poster to express the idea of eliminating gender-based violence.
Students from different countries started sharing what they did and explaining the idea behind their posters. Also, the Filipino students shared a Filipino phrase expressing how strong women are, while other students created a poster to encourage women to speak and to educate people on this vital matter.
The event was very insightful and educational and the best thing about it is that it gathered students from different countries and cultures who believe in the cause and share the same opinion on eliminating violence.
Special thanks to the ladies who created this insightful and informative event to educate and spread awareness regarding violence against women, and I hope this type of educational event continues.
