Dear students,
It is my great pleasure to announce an upcoming special lecture for Monday, October 24. Mark Elder, a director of Governance and Capacity Group at Institute for Global Environmental Strategies [IGES], will be giving a special lecture titled "Rio+20: Issues and options regarding the reform of the institutional framework for sustainable development (IFSD)".

For more information, please see the abstract of this presentation below:The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) will
take place in Brazil on 4-6 June 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of
the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development
(UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World
Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg. The
objective of the Conference is to secure renewed political commitment
for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the
remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major
summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging
challenges. The Conference will focus on two themes: (a) a green
economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty
eradication; and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable
development (IFSD). In preparation for Rio+20, a series of regional
and subregional meetings are being held, and the Asian and Pacific
Regional Preparatory Meeting for Rio+20 is to be held in Seoul, 19-20
October 2011, organized by UNESCAP.
This presentation will explore key issues regarding the institutional
framework for sustainable development, as well as advantages and
disadvantages of various reform options such as strengthening the
United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), creating a World
Environment Organization, reforming the Commission on Sustainable
Development (CSD), creating an umbrella organization for sustainable
development, and others. The relation to economic institutions and the
Green Economy and highlights of the Asian and Pacific Regional
Preparatory Meeting will also be discussed.
