Official records (transcripts and diplomas) bearing the signature of the registrar or other responsible academic officer and the seal of the issuing institution are required in all applications for graduate admission.  Applicants with academic work in progress who expect to complete a degree program before the intended date of enrollment at UCSD must provide evidence of degree conferral and a final academic transcript as soon as it is available.

An international applicant who has studied abroad must have earned the equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree with above average results.

Transcript Format

Please refer to your online application.  The department will specify whether to submit electronic or hard copy forms.  Please note most departments only accept electronic copies of transcripts.

Electronically Submitted Transcripts

For Application Review purposes:  Scanned and uploaded copies of transcripts are acceptable by some departments.  In the online application you will be ed to upload a pdf of your scanned documents.  Please upload both the front and back sides of the transcript, even if the back side is blank.  One set of transcripts must be provided for each application submitted.

Upon provisional admission to graduate study at UC San Diego:  Official hard copy transcripts from all institutions attended and from the institution where you obtained  your undergraduate degree will be required to finalize your admission and must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions office.

Hard Copy Transcripts

For review purposes please submit official hard copy transcripts to the department to which you are applying.  One set of transcripts must be provided for each application submitted.

Note: Transcripts and all other application materials will not be returned to applicants under any circumstances. Plan to order sufficient copies of your academic records to meet projected needs.

Applicants who attended any campus of the University of California, including UCSD, must provide official transcripts of the UC course work. Transcripts from UCSD may be ordered by an applicant from the Office of the Registrar. There is no charge for UCSD transcripts of record sent to departments in support of an application for graduate study at UCSD.


Foreign academic records must show all courses attended each year, examinations passed, seminars completed, and grades or marks received at all institutions where formal records are maintained. Official evidence of degree conferral must also be supplied, together with evidence of rank in class if available.

Official academic records and/or transcripts may take the form of:

  • Transcripts, attestations, appendices or addenda to diplomas, or mark sheets showing courses and examinations, units or hours, and grades (rank in class, if available).
  • Diplomas, degree certificates, or professional titles showing the degree and date conferred.
Official academic records and/or transcripts must be issued in the language of instruction and accompanied by official English translations. Acceptable documentation includes:
  • Originals issued by the university bearing the original stamp or seal and the signature of the authorized official.
  • Official copies issued by the degree granting university bearing the stamp or seal and signature of the authorized official.
  • Official literal (word for word) English translations issued by the degree granting institution.

Translations prepared by an accredited member of a translator’s association, such as American Translator’s Association (ATA), are acceptable. They must be prepared from official copies of your academic records or degree certificate, in the original language. Credential evaluations prepared by other schools or by private agencies are not accepted.

The following list gives you general guidelines to help you determine if your academic background is adequate for application to graduate studies at University of California, San Diego. Academic records will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Japan, Korea, People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, and Thailand: Bachelor’s degree requiring a minimum of 4 years of study.
