It was a rainy day when I visited Mr. Kim’s Chinese restaurant, Congee Gogo, for an interview. Little garden in front of the restaurant was beautifully and thoughtfully gardened. After 15 minutes I arrived at the restaurant, he was rushing into the restaurant with his wife and apologized for being little late for the interview. "I’m sorry for being late. I had to go to the City Terminal to pick up abalones coming from Mokpo. This is something I always take care of by myself." Before I met him, I was assuming that he may be authoritarian after working at a bureaucratic government for such a long time. Contrary to my expectations, he was such a humble person with a full of energy. He told me that he comes to restaurant every morning and carefully plants the garden, cleans the restaurant, greets customers, serves and even picks up the supplies for the restaurant.   When he resigned from the Vice-Minister at the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2001, he decided to study at the KDI School. He was at the age of 60 and had worked 36 years at the government and perhaps it was time for him to take some rest. However, he came to the KDI School and spent day and night at the school studying and even went to Rutgers University for 1 year to finish political studies. “Although it was a really tough time, I tried my best and learned a lot from the school life and it became the foundation of my second life. I’m so grateful for those times and that’s why I’m willing to serve as an Alumni President at the KDI School”   After finishing the school, he was designated as a director at Korean Local Administration Office and also appointed as a Dean at Dankuk University. Last year, he resigned from Dankuk University and decided to open a Chinese restaurant. He wanted to start something he can do for the rest of his life with his wife. Friends and family around him worried about his new adventure but he was confident that this new business would bring him more energy and happiness. “People live long these days, even after 80 years old and I didn’t want to just sit back home doing nothing for next 20 years. I believe that keeping me busy and upgrading myself are the secrets to live young. And I think opening up a Chinese restaurant has been and it will be my second life adventure which I enjoy a lot.” He also added, “There are 5 criteria for the happy life: 1. Good health, 2. Reliable and loving spouse, 3. Reasonable amount of money, 4. Work to keep you busy, 5. Good friends. After I opened the restaurant, I became healthier, spend more time with my wife, am still financially independent, have something to do for the rest of my life, and meet with friends more often than before because they come here for meetings and family gatherings. I ”   Little over one hour at the dinner table, he shared his beliefs and a view of life with me. All along the interview, I couldn’t think of any other words than “passion”. 67, his age, is just a number and he is surely among the very young at his heart.
