Call for essays

This case writing practicum course is a pre-requisite for participation in the school’s case-based area studies program. Students taking the course will have chances in the class to design a rigorous field research project to mount back in their home region during the summer recess. The school’s area studies program will then vet appropriate research projects and fund interviews and other necessary data collection efforts. The resulting case study may help fulfill the student’s graduation requirement as a capstone project. Case studies that meet quality standards may be uploaded at the World Bank’s Global Delivery Initiative case studies library.

The practicum has a class-size ceiling of maximum 15 students. In case the number of applicants exceeds the ceiling, the instructors will screen using two criteria: (a) (cumulative) GPA up to the 2018 spring term, and (b) one-page essay on a possible Science of Delivery case study topic of one’s choice.

Science of Delivery is in its essence a typology of various reasons for stakeholder groups including the government to be stuck in a poor equilibrium, where government fails to deliver essential services in a satisfactory manner. With this in mind, the one-page essay should include information on (a) the country, (b) the sector, (c) the period, (d) the nature of the problem, and (e) initial thoughts of the essayist on why the problem persists. If the essay contains a “turnaround” in the narrative, it will receive an additional credit in evaluation. For samples of Science of Delivery case study, interested students may refer to the materials available at the following links:

In preparing the essay, the students may also refer to the list of delivery challenges as classified by the GDI.(http://www.globaldeliveryinitiative.org/sites/default/files/pages/delivery_challenges_taxonomy_0.pdf)

In order to go through the screening process of this course, you should submit one-page essay stated above by June 13 (Wed.) with your student ID number via email (hm_kwon@kdischool.ac.kr) whether you have already registered for the course or not. The finalized student list will be announced by June 19 (Tue.).

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Prof. Junesoo Lee.
