DESCRIPTION:

The KDI Latin American and Caribbean Forum promotes activities that contribute to the academic and professional development of the student community in KDI School of Public Policy and Management; so, this time, the forum presented a case of one of the most successful countries in the world and in the region in terms of achievement social progress. The conference was provided by the two Costa Rican students in KDI, Fabiola Rodríguez, and Marcela Salazar.

This interesting topic was chosen because Costa Rica is an exceptional case of success in social and commercial policies that can be shared to the international community. The story of success of this country can be seen in diverse international indicators such as the Human Development Index, life expectancy, years of education, health indicators, and internet access, among others.

The story of success has been particularly recognized in the Social Progress Index, launched by Michael Porter, which portraits Costa Rica as the biggest over performer on relative social progress, with the less quantity of resources. This multi-indicator index uses traditional economic measures and defines the capacity of a State to meet the basic human needs of its citizens. Furthermore, it promotes the participation of the citizens and communities to enhance and sustain the quality of their lives and create the conditions for all individuals to reach their full potential.

Therefore through the conference, students and KDI community had the chance to know more about the Social Progress Index, the reality of the country and some of the most important public policies used by the government to achieved it.

• 12:20 -  Silvana Arce, Community Manager of the LAC Forum, welcomes the audience and calls the LAC Forum representative to say a few words.
• 12:25. - Rigoberto Carvallo, LAC Forum Representative, welcomes the audience as well as the guest speakers.
• 12:30. - Silvana Arce, introduces guest speakers Fabiola Rodríguez and Marcela Salazar.
• 12:30 – Guest speakers start the videoconference based on four stages.

1. Social Progress Index - brief background and explanation of its main components.
2. Results of Costa Rica in SPI - presentation as the country with higher social progress in relative terms. Comparison with GDP per capita.
3. Strategies to achieved it- Guest speakers analyzes and presented 10 main public policies in Social and Commercial areas.
4. Main challenges of the country

• 13:30- Guest speakers finish their conference, and starts with the questions raised by KDI students.            
• 13:45. – Silvana Arce closures the event.
