 [KDIS] MERS Prevention Guidelines

Dear Students,

Please note that this is a further announcement for prevention on MERS. The situation still seems critical, so the School encourages you to follow the recommended guidelines over the weekends.

Specially, please refrain from travelling to other cities and minimize outdoor activities (grocery shopping, visiting religious facilites, or wherever crowd is expected).

Also, if you have suspected symptoms over the weekends, pleasereport your situation to the housemaster directly and stay at your dorm room . The housemaster will guide you to get proper treatment accordingly.

Again, we thank you for the cooperation in advance.

Note: Masks will be distributed to everyone, and hand sanitizers will be placed on campus starting this afternoon. Those who live in on campus can take a mask from dormitory (Info desk of 102 building), and the remaining students should take it at the Information Desk on the 2nd floor of the school building.

Dear Students

KDI School would like to urgently inform guidelines to prevent MERS.

Please note that recently there have been cases of MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) infections spreading in South Korea. MERS patients typically exhibit high fevers, coughing and shortness of breath and the disease is transmitted through close contact with affected individuals.

There have been 2 confirmed deaths from the virus, spreading fear and concern among the populace. Further reports note a rise in the number of tertiary infectees.

As a precaution, the KDI School strongly recommends the following:

1.      Refrain from travelling to other cities, such as Daejeon and Chungju, which are also noted to be affected areas.

2.      Wear masks outdoors, and pay attention for hygiene. Please wash hands and foot diligently. Mask and Hand Sanitizer will be shortly distributed at the dormitory.

3.      In case of MERS suspected symptoms [high fevers (over 37.5C), coughing, breathing difficulties, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, and etc], contact the Student Affairs Division at 044-550-1010 ASAP. We also advise you to call the Health Ministry''s MERS hotline at 043-719-7777.

Attached are a list of guidelines to help prevent the spread of the virus, and further information can be found at the following link:  http://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/mers/faq.html

6 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW TO PREVENT MERS

1. Wear a mask if you''re going to a crowded location.

Government officials initially stated that airborne infection was very unlikely, but such assertion seems hard to support now. The virus can definitely spread through saliva or other bodily fluids, so it''s best to wear a mask when you''re riding a subway, bus or going to places like hospitals.

2. Wash your hands diligently. Also, use alcohol-based sanitizer whenever possible.

Before and after going out, you should wash your hands. Use soap to scrub your hands for at least 30 seconds, rinsing between fingers, nails, etc.

3. Do not use your hand to block a sneeze or cough. If you do not have a handkerchief or tissue, use your shirtsleeve.

4. Avoid contact with camels and any products made from camels. For camel milk, make sure it''s completely virus-free before drinking.

Avoid all things to do with camels and certainly do not eat camel or camel-related food items.

5. If your temperature rises or if you experience coughing, breathing difficulties, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, etc, then contact Health Ministry''s MERS hotline at 043-719-7777.

If any of the above symptoms are acute, you should call the hotline immediately.

6. If within two weeks of your visit to the Mid-East, you show signs of any of the above, contact the nearest clinic then head to a local medical facility to determine the cause.
