[KDI Healthcare Room: Health Information for December, 2018]

Today, I want to talk about the importance of not drinking coffee or any caffeinated beverages while you are taking cold medicines. Some of the OTC medications for cold can make you sleepy and reach out for a cup of coffee to stay awake. From now on, please STOP drink coffee when you take cold medications. According to the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, caffeinated drinks such as coffee or coke should be avoided when taking cold medicines.

Why should I NOT drink coffee when taking cold medicines?

Ephedrine is a medication that is broadly used in common OTC cold medicines to relieve nasal congestion or cough. Some of those OTC cold medicines add stimulant chemicals such as caffeine to prevent being sleepy, which is one of the common side effects of antihistamines.

Both Ephedrine and Caffeine stimulate sympathetic nervous system increasing heart rates and blood pressure. Therefore, if you drink coffee which contains a lot of caffeine, you may experience feelings of heart palpitation or insomnia due to caffeine overdose

You must be careful when you take any bronchodilator such as albuterol, used for asthma or chronic bronchitis because caffeine can cause nervousness, anxiety or increased heart rates

Please take your cold medicine with plenty amount of water and do NOT drink any caffeinated beverages such as coffee or sports drinks.

There is no magic pills to treat cold at the moment. Cold medicines available can temporarily relieve uncomfortable symptoms we experience while your body fights against cold viruses. When you develop symptoms of cold, make sure you get enough rest and sleep and eat fruits and vegetable rich in vitamin C to boost your immune system

Please keep yourself warm and wash your hands meticulously to prevent infection during this coming winter season. I hope you stay healthy and have a joyful winter season in Korea!
