[KDI Healthcare Room: Health Information for March, 2019]

Hello!

Today, I want to talk about medications to relieve your headache from hangover. Tylenol is probably one of the most popular and commonly used medication for relieving your headache. You can buy them easily at pharmacies or even convenient stores now days.

However, it is critical to know that Tylenol/Paracetamol should NOT be taken for hangover headache. Let's find more about why.

What is Tylenol/Paracetamol?

Tylenol/Paracetamol, whose generic name is Acetaminophen, is a pain reliever and fever reducer. It is one of the most widely used pain medications in the world. For this reason, most cold medications available in pharmacies have acetaminophen in them along with other medications that help relieve cold symptoms such as coughing or nasal congestion.

It is important for you to know that Acetaminophen is the generic name of Tylenol/Paracetamol and you must check the drug contents when you reach for any OTC medications.

Why should Tylenol/Paracetamol NOT be taken for hangover headache?

One of the most well-known side effects of Tylenol/Paracetamol is its toxicity to the liver. When Tylenol/Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is absorbed into our body, it is metabolized and produces a toxic byproduct, which can kill the liver cells.

It is considered safe if you follow the recommended dosage; however, it still produces the byproduct that can be really harmful to the liver through its metabolic process in our body.

Why does alcohol increase the liver toxicity of acetaminophen?

When you drink alcohol, the liver produces enzymes that metabolize alcohol. These enzymes convert acetaminophen into toxic byproducts, therefore enhancing the toxic effects of Tylenol.

What medications should I take for hangover headache?

You must avoid painkillers that has acetaminophen. Instead, consider NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen to relieve your headache from hangover

If you have underlying diseases or are not sure which or how to take the medication, please consult with your doctor or pharmacist prior to taking any medication.

Again, do NOT take Tylenol/Paracetamol (acetaminophen) after drinking alcohol nor drink any alcohol when taking Tylenol/Paracetamol!
