Summary of your project This research project will provide a multidimensional analysis of migration from and within Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), addressing both historical trends and contemporary challenges. By examining the drivers of migration and their impact on public opinion, this project will contribute to deeper understanding of migration in the LAC region and the responses across the region and the host countries to provide a comprehensive understanding of anti-immigration sentiments and the consequences on the lives of migrants.

Objective of the Project This project aims to analyze historical migratory flows from and within Latin America and the Caribbean, identify the key drivers behind these migration patterns, and examine the relationship between migration and the rise of anti-immigrant sentiments in both origin and destination countries. The study seeks to provide a comprehensive and comparative analysis of how economic, political, and social factors influence migration trends and how these movements shape public opinion and policy responses across the region.

To achieve this, first, we will examine historical migration trends, identifying major waves of movement, shifts in preferred destinations, and changes in the demographic composition of migrants. Understanding who migrates and where they go will provide valuable context for analyzing the factors that drive these movements. These drivers include economic and political conditions such as unemployment and wage disparities, political instability, violence, human rights concerns.

Beyond analyzing migration patterns, this project will assess how migration is perceived in selected LAC countries and main destination countries. To achieve this, we will collect, analyze and compare public opinion data on migration’s contributions, while also conducting surveys to assess immigrants’ experiences and perceptions of their treatment. This will allow us to contrast how nationals perceive immigrants with the lived experiences of migrants themselves, capturing differences between societal attitudes and immigrant realities.

These surveys will help us analyze how factors like media narratives, political discourse, and economic conditions influence public opinion. By combining historical migration analysis with public perception data, we aim to provide a more comprehensive picture of how migration is perceived and discussed in the region.
Expected Benefits from the Project Through this research, we hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of migration in the LAC region. By mapping historical trends and identifying key drivers, we aim to provide a clearer picture of how and why people move. Additionally, exploring the link between migration and anti-immigrant sentiments will help contextualize current debates and societal reactions to migration. This project can offer insights into how migration experiences shape public opinion and how different narratives about immigrants emerge. The findings may be useful for further academic work, discussions on migration policies, or efforts to foster more informed conversations on the topic, as well as to foster more inclusive and development-oriented migration policies across LAC and beyond.
