Conservation of Wild Salmon Species in Northeast Asia - Brief intro of project Title Conservation of Wild Salmon Species in Northeast Asia Sustainable Development Goals 14. Life Below Water Timely Global Issues 5. Exchange of Knowledge and Culture Fisheries Summary of your project Wild salmon species could be found in rivers in both North and South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Northeast China. Knowledge of wild salmon population and natural history scattered in journals and websites in different local languages of these countries. Salmon supports local livelihood, and also serves as an indicator of river and ocean ecological health. By collecting information, both historical and current, we can gather knowledge and build interest in conservation of the wild salmon; river habitats and strengthen cross border environmental cooperation. Northeast Asia also witnesses rapid growth of salmon farms. Its ecological impact and fish welfare issue are yet to be assessed. With this research and collaborative project, we wish to stir an interest among stakeholders in this region for conservation of salmon species, and pave the way for further conservation cooperation at various level. -
